Illustrated Talk: Llan yr Eglwys – The Churchyard as a Celtic Tradition

On our walks we see churchyards as part of our landscape, but an ancient churchyard can also be part of our Celtic heritage, even older than the church itself.  This is the fascinating subject for Peter Hatherley’s illustrated talk at The Bear Hotel in Crickhowell at 7.30pm next Wednesday 29th March.

Peter is a member of the Brecon Beacons Park Society and he has led some interesting walks for us.  For many years he has also been exploring and photographing ancient churchyards throughout Wales, Cornwall and Brittany, the latter being a Celtic outpost on continental Europe where the churchyard has been developed into an art form.  Prehistoric monuments, healing wells and ancient yew trees give clues to these sites which were held as sacred before the arrival of Christianity.

All will be revealed in Peter’s talk.
