David Jones at Capel-y-ffin – help wanted!!
An exhibition of David Jones’ paintings from his time at Capel-y-ffin in the 1920s, is being planned for 2023 at y Gaer in Brecon. The organisers are appealing for anyone who has one of his paintings to contact them with a view to lending it to the exhibition.
The painter and poet David Jones (1895-1974) described his time in the isolated community at Capel-y-ffin in the Black Mountains in the 1920s as ‘a new beginning’ after art school and then his devastating experiences in the First World War. His many extended stays were taken between Christmas 1924 and summer 1928. He wrote ‘My subsequent work can, I think, be truthfully said to hinge on that period.
Around 50 works will be included in the exhibition. At its heart will be the works Jones made around the time of his visits to Capel-y-ffin. However many of his finest paintings of the valley are in private collections. We need your help to try and locate as many original watercolours as possible to make this a truly memorable exhibition.
