A Talk and a Walk (or two) with Judith Harvey
Judith Harvey will be giving us an illustrated talk on “Projects in the Park” at The Bear Hotel in Crickhowell at 7.30pm on Wednesday 14th June.
Judith has been a Warden for many years and is now Warden Manager for the Brecon Beacons National Park. So this will be a great opportunity to learn about the wide range of projects which are currently in hand in the Park. Judith will show us sites like Waun Fignen Felen where peat conservation is proving its worth; she will tell of “Explosive Times” in the gunpowder factory (the Park Society has a special interest in this one); and she will review lots of other topics such as the surfacing of upland paths, control of erosion, signage, new bridges, self-closing gates, path construction and open access.
Following this talk there will be a special interest walk on Friday 30th June when Judith and Estate Warden Steffan Edwards will take us to see what is going on in the west of the Park around Y Mynydd Du (see our Summer Programme for details).
Finally, Judith has asked me to bring to your attention the “National Meadows” open day for plant life which is being held on 1st July, between 10am and 4pm, at Pengraig goch, Llanddeusant, SA19 9TH, GR SN745224, map OL12. This is the farm of Dr Ruth Watkins who has immense expertise in ecology and has worked hard to diversify the plant species over the past 16 years. Part of the farm has now been designated as SSSI, and this designation reflects much of the grazing regime that Ruth has developed. There will be a programme of short walks around the farm, and I’m sure that the day will be of great interest to some members of the Park Society.
