Allan Gibbs, Technical Adviser for the BBPS Walks Programme, is talking about a recent trip to Iceland. Not, obviously, to buy beer but to climb the highest mountain there. This being: Hvannadadalshnuker 2119m/6952ft. This peak is at the top of the largest ice cap in Europe, in Vatnajokull National Park. In the late summer of 2023 Allan, together with his youngest son Oliver, set out to climb the peak. This then, is a tale of 14,000 feet of ascent/descent and an 18 hour non stop day. The descent didn`t actually quite go to plan, but I`ll leave explanation of that to the night. Some top tips on Iceland glacier travel and how to avoid crevasses, hypothermia and ridiculous beer prices. The talk is, as ever, via Powerpoint, so lots of holiday snaps too. Some even of Iceland……
