Grading Guide
- The grades are based on the distance and the number of climbs (ascents), but, nevertheless, are subjective and can only be approximate.
- The weather can have a considerable effect on the difficulty of the walk, so even an Energetic walk can feel like a Strenuous one in bad weather. Check the weather forecast before setting out.
- If in doubt, don't chance it! Ask the Walk Leader for advice.
Strenuous Walk - Red
Requires fitness and stamina to cope with several steep climbs and/or cover a good distance at a steady pace.
Energetic Walk - Yellow
Generally involve two steep climbs, but they will require determined application.
Moderate Walk - Green
Will seldom have steep climbs, but if they do, the climb will be taken at a relaxed pace.
Easy Walk - Blue
Suitable for all abilities
How do we work out the walk grade?
Although the grading has a subjective element to it, we do have a guidance chart, which our leaders use when assessing their walk.
No system will be perfect, but many of our walks have been graded on this basis and have proved the test of time.
The chart on the right shows the relationship between distance and ascent that is used when assessing a walk grade.
